Fiona Niland is a self-taught Irish visual artist based in the west of Ireland. Her current figurative paintings explore bodies situated within water, landscape and open space, where movement, gravity, light and atmosphere alter the experience of physical form.
Her painting practice began with portraiture while she was teaching English language and literature in London. After moving to Dubai, she explored a broader range of subjects and approaches, including beach scenes, still life and abstraction. Following her return to the west of Ireland, the work has increasingly returned to the figure, over time shifting from the portrait as identity to the experience of a body being in the world.
